Google Ads for Dentists: A Complete Guide to Profitable Campaigns
Social media is brilliant for creating demand, but Google Ads captures demand that already exists. When someone types “dental implants near me” or “Invisalign [town]”, they are telling you exactly what they want, right now. That intent is what makes search advertising one of the most reliable ways for a practice to win high-value patients, provided it's set up properly. Done badly, it's also one of the fastest ways to waste a budget, which is why so many dentists try Google Ads, see poor results, and give up.
This guide covers how to run search campaigns that actually pay for themselves.
The biggest single mistake practices make is bidding too broadly. Keywords fall into rough tiers of intent:
Equally important is your negative keyword list, the terms you exclude. Filtering out “jobs”, “nhs” (if you're private), “free” and “courses” stops you paying for clicks that will never become patients.
One of the most common and costly errors is mismatched intent, showing a composite bonding ad to someone searching for implants, or vice versa. Every campaign should be tightly themed so the keyword, the ad copy and the landing page all talk about the same treatment. When a patient searching for implants clicks an implant ad and lands on an implant page, conversion soars. When they don't, your budget evaporates.
Your homepage is built for everyone, which makes it ideal for no one. Paid clicks should land on a dedicated, fast-loading landing page built around a single treatment and a single action. The best dental landing pages include a clear headline matching the search, a strong offer (free consultation, finance from £X/month), real results and reviews, and a simple form or call button above the fold. Page speed matters too, every extra second of load time costs you conversions.
A clean account structure, separate campaigns for implants, aligners, cosmetic and emergency, lets you control budget and see clearly what's working. Lump everything together and you lose the ability to scale your winners and cut your losers. Use location targeting tightly around your catchment, and schedule ads for when your team can actually answer the phone.
Clicks and impressions tell you almost nothing. You need conversion tracking, calls, form fills and bookings, wired up so you know your true cost per enquiry and cost per booked patient. Connect this to a CRM and you can follow a click all the way to treatment revenue, which is the only way to know what your campaigns are really worth.
Google Ads is not set-and-forget. The accounts that win are pruned constantly: pausing keywords that don't convert, reallocating budget to winners, testing new ad copy, and refining negative keywords as new wasteful searches appear. Small, regular improvements compound into dramatically lower costs per patient over time.
Profitable Google Ads for dentists comes down to a few disciplines: bid only on high-intent, local keywords; match every ad to the right treatment and a dedicated landing page; track real conversions through to revenue; and optimise continuously. Get those right and search becomes a predictable tap of high-value patients you can turn up as you grow.
