Client challenges

Mamas & Papas is a much-loved British nursery and baby brand with decades of heritage, but the business had been bought out of administration and needed to rebuild commercially, and fast. Two big challenges sat side by side: modernising its core e-commerce, and unlocking a brand-new international market in China.

  • Rebuilding after administration. The brand needed a stronger, more modern e-commerce foundation to drive its recovery and growth.
  • Cracking China from scratch. Entering the Chinese market meant navigating completely different platforms, payment habits, language and consumer expectations.
  • Getting localisation right. A premium brand can't afford clumsy translation or a tone-deaf market approach in a new region.

The solution

We worked as part of a wider team to rebuild Mamas & Papas' commerce and open up China the right way.

A custom Shopify store. Alongside another agency, we assisted in developing a bespoke Shopify store, giving the brand a modern, scalable e-commerce platform to drive its recovery.

A considered China launch. We launched the brand in China with a brochure website to establish presence, then built out their e-commerce directly on the Chinese shopping apps where local customers actually buy.

Local expertise and localisation. We partnered with a Chinese agency to make sure translation, tone and the overall market approach were genuinely right for local consumers, not simply lifted from the UK.

The result

The combined approach worked. One year on from launch, Mamas & Papas saw a 200% uplift, a powerful turnaround for a heritage brand rebuilding out of administration, and proof that the right e-commerce foundation, plus a properly localised international launch, can reopen growth in entirely new markets.
